Waterlogging – A common phenomenon that has become a part of our lives with every monsoon. Memes of roads covered in knee-deep water and long lines of immovable traffic that takes longer to reach one’s destination than traveling on foot. The recent rains in Bengaluru and Mumbai brought back the same memories. Every year we try to make small changes to reduce this, but every year we see the same phenomenon repeating. And one thing is for sure. The effects of climate change are here for us to see.
Bengaluru and Mumbai are respectively known as the startup and business capital of the country. But a side-effect of this rapid growth is the inadequate infrastructure for the large influx of people that come to these cities every year. While we have some of the best and innovative minds working here, and as we try to make a home for ourselves here, let’s look at how small behavior changes like adopting shared mobility can create a small difference in mitigating the effects of climate change:
- Green and Sustainable: Shared Mobility options that are powered by a fleet of electric vehicles have the double advantage of being green and sustainable, along with being road-friendly. For example, your rides on Yulu EVs have helped save over 15,000 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions till date, and we are committed to keep adding to that number as we increase our fleet size, and go to newer cities.
- Reduce Congestion: Personal vehicles are comfortable. But using Shared Mobility for daily usage, and for short mile commute can go a long way in reducing everyday vehicular congestion. It would mean less number of vehicles per capita on the road, and hence lower congestion and commute time.
- Judicious use of resources: Along with this, with multiple usage of a single vehicle, shared mobility, just like public transport, caters to a larger number of people. This means that the same amount of resources are used for a larger impact. This would reduce the burden we place on our planet’s finite resources, and help us use its resources in a more needful manner.
- Create an equitable and inclusive solution to climate change: Shared EV mobility enables affordable access to movement, thus making mobility more equitable. As a result, delivery executives for food, grocery, medicines, etc. have increasingly started using services like Yulu for their delivery needs. And by doing so, they are both reducing the overall vehicle density on the road, and reducing the harmful carbon emissions that our deliveries produce. So, the next time you get a delivery, do check to see if your delivery executive and you have played a small part in making the planet less clogged!
It is upto us to make a choice that would bring this change. While the use of Shared Mobility will not be a standalone factor that will mitigate the effects of climate change, in the long run as more and more people bring about small changes like this in their daily habits, it will trickle down to other spheres of our lives, and we as a community can go a long way in making a difference.
Also the next time it rains, we probably won’t have to paddle to work!
